walls have been a theme in my writing again lately. about 10 years ago i wrote a poem about building a house perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. i imagined that one wall would scroll up like a garage door so that my home could be open to the outside. sometimes i notice that as i get older, i start to shut myself off from nature more and more. in taipei i was freaked out about rather large cockroaches and would close every gap i could find in my apartment to keep them out. (they came up my drains anyway.) last week i took a yoga class in a woman's house here in port of spain - one whole side of the upper floor of her house had no wall, just wrought iron bars. the dining room and living room were open to nature, the house built into the shoulder of a hill from which you could look out onto the caribbean sea. interesting how we often put up walls where there ain't no need for walls at all...09 October 2006
no real walls at all
